Her mentor has treated her incredibly kindly and has thoughtfully put together a plan that not only enables Melissa to provide assistance to the organization, but to really learn more about what music therapy entails. This is the kind of externship experience I would hope for each of our students. Melissa is truly enjoying what she is doing and learning a ton. In addition, her mentor raved about Melissa’s work ethic... No surprise, there.
I also visited Karley, Rebecca, and Kim. Karley and Rebecca both look very professional in their office spaces, and Kim is great with the little ones. Karley, who is working with both Price Charities and IRC (International Rescue Committee) mentioned how she was pleasantly surprised that she enjoys tutoring those her own age through her IRC work at Crawford High. After working with a senior to prepare for an upcoming presentation, she noted in her blog post, “I didn't know I had become someone who could accurately give advice on how to present to a panel of people.” This fact didn’t surprise me in the least, but it also helped me to see that sometimes we need to try flex these HTHI muscles out in the really world to see how strong they really are.
